[edit] DNA testing reveals that our Cook ancestors came over from Germany

September 8, 2009 -- Based on the results of Maurice Cook's DNA test, we can now deduce that our Cook ancestors came over from Germany most likely in the 1700's. The earliest ancestor we have a DNA match with is Johann Henrich Koch b. 1660 in Germany (based on his GGGGG Grandson Leon Koch's DNA test). Johann arrived in PA in 1738 on the [Queen Elizabeth] which sailed from Rotterdam in The Netherlands to Philadelphia. Our DNA matches Johann's line in 65/67 Y-chromosome markers. This translates to an 85% chance of a common ancestor within 8 generations (Maurice Cook) and by 24 generations increases to 99.99%.

So, maybe Johann had a brother or cousin that is directly related to our line. I am digging through all of the passenger lists (on-line) of German immigrants that arrived in the United States between 1683-1791 and I'm finding dozens more with the last name of Koch. It was not uncommon for settlers to change their name once they arrived here to the [patronymic] version of their name which in our case would be Cook. In some cases part of the family would leave it as is and others would change it. I've seen historical records of one family where some would spell it Koch and others would spell it Cook.

Our line migrated to Kentucky and then Missouri, most likely through Virginia on [The Wilderness Road] and through [The Cumberland Gap]. We have another DNA match that is exactly 37/37 markers. John/Jack Cook b. 1796 in KY could very well be our Daniel's brother or first cousin. Both men lived in Russell Co., KY at the same time, and both of their families migrated to Macon Co., MO. Also, they both share a common link with Johann Henrich Koch mentioned above. If we are successful in finding our Koch connection, we will most likely solve the mystery connection between Daniel and John as well!
